Ham Radio constructor-highlights fire-fighting days

Ham Radio constructor-highlights fire-fighting days

Ham Radio constructor-highlights fire-fighting days. My early memories surround waking up during the night due to the fire bell sounding at the bottom of the stairs at Shafto terrace, my dad Stan was in the local fire brigade and the method of summoning the fire crew to the station following emergency calls was via a large house bell and the switching on of a siren located on the rooftop of the fire station.

I joined the fire service at 18 and enjoyed responding to fire calls over a twenty-four hour period seven days a week, technology had moved on by now, we were called to the fire station via a PYE fireman's alert system, a pocket-set device, which would bleep at a high pitch, when we went to bed an acoustic hood was placed over the top to accentuate the sound.

Modern technology replaced the bell and siren

My radio interest was sparked by many things but the curiosity of wanting to know where my dad had gone when he dashed out of the house to drive the local appliance was one of my entry triggers to learn about radio.

I eventually built a receiver to listen to M to LF and the fire appliance from Washington, call sign Foxtrot 181, Washington was station B18 in those days, the old station located behind Walter Wilson's shop on front street Washington.

I went on with radio and became a Radio Engineer working on digital telecommunications systems, but it all started with Durham County Fire Brigade.

Their control was located in Aycliffe in the early days, the fire service had no radio system on their own and used to ask for talk through the LF via the police network-these systems were on A.M. near 98 MHZ, they now use a fire link system over TETRA and its an encrypted radio system, no more listening in.

Ham Radio Operator John Allsopp G4YDM.  Hello and thank you for your very complimentary comments and suggestions for my blog website, they are really useful and help me writing and uploading photographs of interest to many readers.

I am a radio engineer by profession, I started off my engineering career repairing modifying private mobile radio transceivers for the utility companies here in the U.K. Electricity water and gas transceivers were my main occupation many years ago, servicing them for what was a national network then.
I also did some alignment work for emergency service equipment, aerial erection, and fault-finding activities, it all helped, to understand the physics behind transmitters and receivers and of course aerials which play a big part in radio transmissions.

As you can see I am also a Radio Ham, with an interest in building and modifying ex-private mobile radio equipment for use on the international short wave bands and the VHF UHF spectrum.

Below are pictures of radio equipment that I have owned over the last fifty years.

Art and radio have been a constant interest over many years, you can see some of my realistic portraits created in oil on canvas on my home page.

Ham Radio operator-highlights Red Amaryllis.  For all those have requested more pictures of flowers I have uploaded these beautiful pictures of an Amaryllis, they are quite difficult to grow, think it depends on where you buy the bulbs, however, these red flowers have survived a couple of years flowering around Christmas time.

Ham radio operator-Video of South Shields.    Thanks again for your comments about my website, many have focused on Kevin Keegan and Alan Shearer, people from all over the world like these paintings which I created a number of years ago, the originals were sent off to fans of Newcastle United football club after they enquired about sports portraits after seeing Niall Quinn.

Niall was published as a limited edition print run, they were on sale at the Stadium of light in Sunderland and also in the Sunderland football club shop within the Galleries in Washington. Niall's portraits were prompted after a fan-made an inquiry, amazing how much of my artwork has been created after others were inspired to ask if such work could be created.

All of my work is created on Belgium linen canvas, I buy most of it direct from manufacturers, the canvas is treated in gesso then I patiently draw on the subject, and after it all dries thoroughly, I start applying color. I work in OIL on CANVAS only, why, nothing, in my opinion, beats the tones achievable when mixing oil paint-it is so vivid and produces realism like nothing else.

Thank you again for commenting on my oil on canvas portraits-very much appreciated.

Ham radio operator-captures Durham Big Meeting. Many readers have commented on my website in general and you have continued to aspire me to add to my oil portraits on canvas theme by uploading events that happen yearly in Washington.

There are people who worked at the F pit in Washington and have fond memories of Durham big meeting, it used to start at the Welfare Hall on spout lane many years ago and march along Shafto terrace where miners would board coaches to take them to the city of Durham.

My videos below share some of the activities from the band as they march to their buses parked behind the concord bus stand.

Ham Radio operator-explains Artist techniques

Ham Radio operator-explains Artist techniques

Ham Radio operator-explains Artist techniques.   How to paint oil portraits using a projector.   How to paint oil portraits using a projector.  People who read this website on a regular basis will know I,m a realistic portrait artist, some of my work has been seen as far away as New Zealand when I took part in a local exhibition to promote my royal portraits including the Queen and Prince William.

Many people ask how I paint portraits and what techniques I use to create realistic works, I use many actually but I perfected the projection method many years ago, using mainly my own photographs which I duplicate using thin sheets of perspex, this protects the original pictures. I use a projector homemade to project the image onto prepared canvas, gesso is what I use to prepare linen canvas.

I use traditional methods too where I draw onto a plain treated canvas the subject, over time I slowly build up the layers of color to produce my works, leaving them, to dry completely before applying more color or a varnish coat if deciding that I am happy with the creation.

This is Newcastle United Player and Manager Kevin Keegan the above method was used to create this portraits, many will think that projection techniques are cheating in some way, believe me, they are not many artists both old and new use similar methods including the famous old masters.
