Ham Radio operator and Artist John G4YDM-captures Diana

Princess Diana portrait techniques used to create the work

Ham Radio operator and Artist John G4YDM-captures Diana.  Techniques in oil painting are varied from artist to artist many sketches the shape directly, the outline of the painting or portrait onto prepared canvas, the process is to section off your painting and fill in base color in blocks building up the painting as you go along, the next part of the process in to start a color, this like all techniques takes time and practice until you build up your skill through checking your reference photograph, pictures help greatly when you first start out.

I have developed my own Portraits in oil techniques, first I make a copy of my reference photograph onto this perspex sheet which I use to project the image onto canvas my technique which is by no means unique helps perspective and distances such as eyes to mouth, etc which are important points when you begin to paint.

William-Adolphe Bouguereau is my favorite classical painter, my interest in art starts with researching famous oil paintings to get a feel of color and perspective of the greats before I create my own oil portraits.

You will love this painting too

My interest in art started many years ago when I would draw pictures from comics and annual books including painting Disney Characters, I enjoyed copying the cartoons and changing their colors and poses, it was all groundwork for my later life when I created oil portraits of my family and our dog pets.

I have a collection of oil portraits created on linen canvas depicting the Royal family, these works include The Queen Princess Diana The Queen Mother and Prince William, you can see the Queen Mother here entitled celebrity art.

 Polyhymnia, Muse of eloquence

I enjoy coying these famous paintings, I look at their creation especially the detail in the stonework, the swept golden gown is interesting the feet are painted very well as is the chair.

I paint portraits in oil from photographs in various sizes from 12x16 inch through to 24x36 inch, larger portraits can be produced, please ask by using the contact form on this web page.

I use these types of work to learn about color and how to mix it, drawing these wonderful works onto canvas can be achieved by using a projector, a lot of inspiration comes fro the study of old master techniques.

Ham Radio OPerator G4YDM-catches Prince William in oil

Ham Radio OPerator G4YDM-catches Prince William in oil.    Oil is, in my opinion, the best art medium, I say this because of some of my portraits are still as good today after twenty-five years, their colors are bright vivid. Oil has such a wide variety of tones.

My work is contemporary in nature, my oil on canvas portraits have been created over the last forty years and have stood the test of time, colors are still vivid my dogs and horses painted in the last twenty-five years hang in many homes throughout the UK and Europe, they are still admired today by newer generations and some works will be passed down the family as the generations change.

Oil portraits take quite some time to create and finish, this painting in oil of Prince William took over three months to make, drawing onto prepared canvas, with gesso based foundation, the work is slowly built up with various colors to achieve the finished oil portrait, I use a photograph as a reference, it works fine for me, other artists use live drawings and sketches but this depends on the subject.

Ham Radio Operator John Allsopp G4YDM-catches famous sportsman.  I have been painting for many years, portraits of dogs and people, however, they are all modern portraits in oil, they represent today and today's styles and traditions.

I have painted modern oil portraits depicting the Royal family, including Princess Diana, my parents, and our dog pets.

One of the most successful Portraits modern oil painting has been Kevin Keegan shown below, the work is 24 x 36 inches oil on canvas hand-painted in oil.

Oil is a superb medium to work with, no other coloring can compare to the rich vivid tonal color of oil paint used to create this artwork.

Portraits featuring football players decorate a sitting room wall and inspire interesting conversation. Kev as we probably know played and managed Newcastle United football club.

Ham Radio operator catches his dog in oil.   What are they and why are they named contemporary, quite simply they represent a portrait in oil or photograph from our own time as opposed to art that was created in another era, my artwork would be thought of as contemporary.

All of my portraits in oil have been created over the last forty years they depict my parents our pets and special moments captured in time, all contemporary art maybe someday they will be used by researchers delving into the history of contemporary art.

Ham Radio operator paints and highlights classic works

Ham Radio operator paints and highlights classic works

Artist John Allsopp traces pictures of great master paiters to trace their work onto canvas.

Ham Radio operator paints and highlights classic works.  Where do you get inspiration from painting portraits and paintings, a question that I am often asked? Researching old masters helps me get inspired to paint, however looking at the great artists is not the only way I get ideas about future works of art.

Life inspires us to do all manner of things, where we live plays some part on how our lives are shaped philosophy our politics the list goes on and on, art was something I developed an interest in many years ago as a child, coloring books were my introductions to pictures and art. Walt Disney Company produced many books during my early years, I would receive one every Christmas and spend my a happy hour coloring in the Disney characters, eventually, I would use the characters as a reference and then learned how to draw them differently than they appeared in the coloring book, where this interest came no one knows.

As I got older I would study the many classic artists and their work, copying some of the areas in works you see above was my apprenticeship in art, I am essentially self-taught, most people are, we go to college and listen to lectures and follow sequential modules but essentially we teach ourselves by taking the material away and performing self-study

The work you see in this picture is by William-Adolphe Bouguereau it was said that he painted over 800 paintings, many are lost to the world.

These paintings speak volumes to me, I still trace around them which is an artistic skill many artists use to get the perspective of a painting right. From my tracings, I transfer the traced picture to clear thin perspex sheeting and place it on top of my homemade projector, the image is projected onto the canvas where the outline of the work is drawn, I also use grid paper and sometimes perspex with one-centimeter squares drawn onto it to help with fine detail reproduction.

My intention due to the many comments and emails I have received since starting my blog about Oil on canvas paintings and Portraits is to reproduce old masters and offer them as oil paintings for sale.

Ham Radio enthusiast highlights famous paintings

Ham Radio enthusiast highlights famous paintings.  I enjoy researching British artists and thought you would like to see work by James Sant a British painter specializing in women and children, he is famous for his exploration of the symbolism of childhood.

He was a member of the Royal Academy, Sarah Sant and George who was also an artist were thought to be the brother and sister of James.

My work is about realism in art I try to capture a subject in a near-perfect style, the image must be as near to the picture as I possibly can. Many artists draw from real life and then build up the paint on canvas to create their paintings, maybe James worked this way, to paint the portrait you see below which is aptly named the fairy tale.

Ham Radio operator-catches queen in oil

Ham Radio operator-catches queen in oil

Ham Radio operator-catches queen in oil.  Thank you to everyone who has written to ask about how to draw peoples heads, I usually start with a picture which I copy and blow up, a larger picture is easier to see.

Work on a small area of the picture too many people try to draw or color a large area when learning concentrate on doing a small area, I use a grid over the picture to give me an idea of perspective.

The ratio is important peoples heads are around 1 to 8 roughly children have bigger heads than bodies, as they grow the ratio changes, practice drawing heads first and test your color mixing on a very small area of the painting before moving on, I concentrated on perfecting the shape of the Queen's head in proportion to her body.
I am asked a lot of questions about drawing, search the internet there are some excellent videos on youtube showing you how to start drawing. Books on the subject are plentiful, above all keep going eventually like everything you will learn and develop your skills.

  • Draw fine lines when you start with your drawing tablet, they are easily erased if they are not right, practice in all things make perfect.

  • You can find great pictures on the internet to help you get started, magazines and books with illustrations in are what I used.
  • Proportions in a human body, everyone who starts out in art find this difficult in time with practice you will learn the rules a person body is around twelve times the length of the head
  • Star by doing rough sketches, then focus on different parts of the body, you will get there it sounds like a mammoth task, at first it's daunting, keep practicing.
  • Draw the same figure over and over eventually you will get better your drawing will look better each time to practice.

You don't need to possess the ability to draw although you can sketch if you wish, I often use a projector to form the shapes of my paintings and portraits, you could do the same to create digital art remember there are many ways to create art the internet is an excellent way to learn, why not educate yourself in the digital art techniques, art is delightful and a great deal of fun.

Ham Radio operator paints portraits.   John William Waterhouse English painter

I do enjoy looking at classic art and its theme, it gives me a lot of ideas for creating my own oil-based paintings and portraits.

I use a lot of these classic paintings to learn how to draw and color detail which I use when creating my own work.

I specialize in portraits of people and dogs mainly Dachshunds because that is the breed my father bread and showed most of life.

HE really enjoyed dogs especially Dachshunds showing, my portraits of this breed have become part of my interest in oil on canvas portraits.

Artist John Allsopp highlights another British painter

This English painter who I admire was a member of the Royal Academy of arts, he originally worked in a very classic style and then was embraced by the Pre-Rahaelite style, I enjoy looking at these painting from times gone by they gave me ideas for my own future work.

Waterhouse is known for his creations depicting women from both Greek legend and Arthurian legend King Arthur was a British ruler who fought against Saxon invaders.

He was born in Aachen in Germany and developed a truly romantic style of creating art.

Ham Radio Operator John Allsopp-Photographs

Ham Radio Operator John Allsopp-Photographs.  I took this picture a number of years ago, it shows Penshaw Monument a popular attraction not too far from where I live.

During the second world war, it was used as a landmark for spitfire crews who were stationed at nearby Usworth airfield.

I have recently framed this picture as a print and many people have interesting ideas of what it provokes in thought to them, one lady suggested its a gateway to heaven. Another said it looks like a picture from a fairy tale, as she described heading to some secret place, art is wonderful for provoking thought.

Currently being prepared as a painting, the canvas has been primed with gesso and a faint pencil line has outlined the start of the work, I have been asked if the painting will include the rusty metal support that attaches the gate to its post, oh yes I usually paint exactly what I see after all I am a realist whose main aim is to produce as the near-perfect image of what I see.

Ham Radio operator-captures green tomatoes.  Macro photography is very interesting it allows great detail to be caught from a subject, this is a green tomato which I recently printed onto a canvas, it looks very much in place in our kitchen.

Fruit and vegetables look in their right setting when placed in cooking areas, they not only enhance the decor the added interest to a plain wall is remarkable when it comes to looking at the transformation of a wall.

My artwork is all about taken the normal everyday object and turning it into something special, canvas print art is relatively cheap to produce and adds enormous value to an area. I hope I have inspired you with my thoughts about what to do, and how it can change an area, many people have enquired about portraits and paintings featuring still life subjects, please do not hesitate to contact me on the form provided on my home page if you wish to commission me for your still life painting.
